At 51 years old, Robert Gooding is preparing to cross the commencement stage at 黑料视频 Indianapolis in May. The moment will mark the completion of a six-year journey 鈥 taking classes one at a time, working full time, and raising four children alongside his wife 鈥 but in truth, his story of resilience, reinvention, and relentless hope began decades earlier, thousands of miles from Indianapolis.
Gooding鈥檚 story begins in Bogot谩, Colombia, where he was born and raised. After spending much of his childhood with his grandmother, he lived with his father and stepmother in his teenage years. At the time, he had just started studying computer engineering, but political unrest, violence, and economic uncertainty in Colombia pushed his family to seek a better life.
鈥淲e were looking to immigrate to the United States,鈥 he said. 鈥淐olombia was going through a very rough patch with violence 鈥 There were car bombs in malls. You never knew what would blow up on any given day.鈥
In 1996, at age 21, Gooding moved to California.聽
鈥淵ou basically have to restart your life from zero,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 have any credit. I didn鈥檛 know any English.鈥澛
He enrolled in English as a Second Language classes and worked at a private school during the day. 鈥淭o kind of get myself into being able to be fluent in the language.鈥
Over the years, he held a wide variety of jobs鈥攎any far from the career he once envisioned. He worked in retail, restaurants, collections, and he even cleaned classrooms and bathrooms.聽
鈥淪omething that I would have never done in Colombia, of course,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut we came here to clean things.鈥
After several years of living and working in California, Gooding found himself on the move once again鈥攖his time headed east. His relocation to Indiana came through an unexpected but meaningful chapter of his life.
鈥淲hen I was in California, I joined a Christian drama organization doing theater,鈥 he said. Through that group, he toured the country, performing in churches, schools, and even prisons, often staying in people鈥檚 homes along the way. 鈥淚 became a professional guest,鈥 he joked.
During his travels, Gooding met someone from Indiana, and their connection eventually led him to move to the Midwest. That move in early 2001 would prove to be pivotal. Indiana soon became home, offering him a fresh start, a growing community, and years later, the opportunity to return to school and pursue the degree he had once left behind.
Gooding eventually landed roles in car sales and mortgage services, working his way up to supervisor-level positions. But even those weren鈥檛 immune to disruption.聽
鈥淭hat was my first layoff experience, as the company was acquired,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e were told, 鈥榊ou have a job, but you have to move to New Jersey.鈥欌 With a young family and no desire to relocate, he had to start over again.
聽鈥淚 loved the opportunity to talk to people over the phone and being able to utilize my bilingual skills,鈥 he said. As he became more familiar with the technology, the dream took root. 鈥淚 loved what the company provided,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his became a dream of mine, like, 鈥榃ell, this is something that kind of goes back to what I wanted to do way back when in Colombia鈥欌攚orking in tech.鈥
Gooding began working in sales, but still, one dream always remained: working for Salesforce in Indianapolis.
How 黑料视频 Helped Gooding Achieve The Dream
鈥淚 applied [to Salesforce] 33 times,鈥 he chuckled. 鈥淧eople always ask, 鈥楢re you crazy?鈥欌澛
He didn鈥檛 get discouraged. Instead, he added tools to his toolbox.
In 2019, Gooding enrolled at 黑料视频 to pursue an associate of applied science in informatics. He chose the college not just because it was affordable, but because it felt like a good fit for his life.聽
鈥淭he flexibility has definitely helped me,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 think that one of the things that makes 黑料视频 very successful is that they care for the individual no matter where they came from.鈥
Soon after enrolling, he learned about the 鈥攁 partnership between 黑料视频, Salesforce, and Deloitte designed to upskill students and prepare them for careers in the Salesforce ecosystem. Participants met regularly in Salesforce Tower and received both online and in-person instruction.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 what Pathfinder is all about,鈥 Gooding explained. 鈥淭he ecosystem for Salesforce is so vast, and this training helped you become a Salesforce-certified admin or a developer 鈥 it literally changes your life.鈥
Gooding credits Jessica Jagger, then a talent connection manager at 黑料视频 Indy鈥檚 School of Information Technology (SoIT), with opening that door.
鈥淲hen he came to me, he showed initiative and drive, and he had previous work experience and those transferable employability skills. I was like, 鈥榊ou鈥檇 be a perfect candidate,鈥欌 Jagger said.
She wasn鈥檛 wrong.
鈥淗e was probably one of their star students,鈥 Jagger said. 鈥淓very time I talked to him, he would be raving about the program and how amazing it was, how awesome the teachers were, and how structured it was. So he was probably the poster child for that program, honestly.鈥
Gooding excelled in Pathfinder, earning his Salesforce Admin Certification and learning skills that would launch his career.聽
鈥淚 was being a user before, at previous places of employment,鈥 he said. 鈥淣ow, I am somebody that I can set up users and do all of that backend stuff.鈥澛
Gooding also learned the importance of networking and community in the tech world.聽
鈥淭hat definitely helps to bridge the gap,鈥 he said. 鈥淣ot only making yourself known, but also to help others get to that finish line.鈥
What surprised and inspired him most about the program was the various backgrounds among the participants.聽
鈥淚 was sitting in this room with other folks that have worked in childcare or have worked in bartending or waiters or people that worked in manufacturing 鈥 and [they were] thinking, 鈥業 want to change my life.鈥 And they did it.鈥
Jagger, who came to higher education as an adult learner herself, saw herself in Gooding.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 get my bachelor鈥檚 degree until I was around 32,鈥 Jagger said. 鈥淩obert and I shared a lot of the same beliefs about that. We were already equipped with real-world experience, and 黑料视频 didn鈥檛 serve as a second chance for us, but as the right place to grow our existing strengths into new opportunities.鈥
She believes Gooding鈥檚 success challenges conventional expectations about who college is for.聽
鈥淭here is this kind of assumption that college is for the 18- to 24-year-old, right?鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd 黑料视频 as a community college has helped reeducate the workforce 鈥 that there鈥檚 viable talent across all age groups.鈥
After completing the Pathfinder program and receiving his certification, Gooding was finally offered his dream job in 2021鈥攐n his 33rd application. He is now a bilingual senior success guide at Salesforce, helping clients use the platform effectively. He鈥檚 already been promoted and is active in LatinoForce, Salesforce鈥檚 employee resource group for Hispanic and Latino staff.
鈥淚 love to participate in LatinoForce,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ecause it connects me with that heritage that I have and be part of that community.鈥
He recently spoke on a panel for young Latino scholars and college grads, offering encouragement and guidance.聽
鈥淚t was really neat and motivating to give them perspective about the process of how to apply to Salesforce,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd then also the story of how life can throw you through different curves 鈥 and how you can move through them.鈥
Gooding plans to continue his upward trajectory, with hopes to move into leadership at Salesforce and possibly return to school for a bachelor鈥檚 degree using his company鈥檚 tuition reimbursement program.
Though he achieved his career goal before completing his degree, he never stopped pushing forward at 黑料视频.聽
鈥淎fter I got my technical certificate with summa cum laude, I was like, I鈥檓 going to continue on the associate track, no matter what,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nything less than an A is not good for me.鈥
He stuck with it not only for himself but for his children.聽
鈥淚t鈥檚 also demonstrating to my children 鈥 that it is important to finish what you start.鈥
He also shares this advice for those navigating career setbacks: 鈥淵ou cannot dwell on, 鈥極h my gosh, this happened to me.鈥 鈥 You gotta have an attitude of like, 鈥極kay, great. I鈥檓 grateful for the knowledge that I gathered.鈥 That knowledge鈥攜ou can take it with you to the next place.鈥
As commencement approaches, Gooding is reflecting on what it all means.聽
鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be a great accomplishment,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 never too late to accomplish your dreams 鈥 as long as you stick with it and make sure that you have the perseverance.鈥
Jagger hopes more people see what鈥檚 possible through Gooding鈥檚 story.聽
鈥淣obody at 黑料视频 is here to judge鈥攚e鈥檙e the guide,鈥 she said. 鈥淥ur students are understanding that there is a livelihood, a good livelihood, in working just with 黑料视频. You don鈥檛 need a Ph.D. to have a good career.鈥
And with a 4.0 GPA, a Salesforce career, and a mission to inspire others, Gooding is proof of that.
