Gabe Connell, founder of the popular pizza chain , recently visited 黑料视频鈥檚 Indianapolis campus for a relaxed and engaging conversation with students in Steve Thrash鈥檚 class in the Entrepreneurship program. Connell invited students to join in the conversation, ask questions, and share their thoughts as he recounted his entrepreneurial journey, offering real-world insights into the challenges and rewards of starting and growing a successful business.
Connell, who founded HotBox in 2004, shared his story of transforming a small local pizza shop into a thriving franchise 鈥 as someone who once never thought he would franchise 鈥 with multiple locations across Indiana. He emphasized the importance of branding, customer engagement, and community involvement in building a successful business.聽
鈥淲e always wanted to have a brand that our customers could relate to and be a part of,鈥 Connell told the class. 鈥淭he product has to stand on its own, and then we can back it up with fun marketing and branding.鈥
Steve Thrash, the chair of the Entrepreneurship program at 黑料视频, highlighted the value of having successful business owners like Connell speak to students.聽
鈥淩eal-world insights are invaluable,鈥 Thrash said. 鈥淪tudents gain firsthand knowledge from founders who have navigated the challenges of starting and growing a business. It鈥檚 one thing to read about entrepreneurship in a textbook, but it鈥檚 another to hear directly from someone who鈥檚 been in the trenches.鈥
Connell鈥檚 visit also served as a source of inspiration and motivation for the students.聽
鈥淗earing directly from successful entrepreneurs helps students see that business success is achievable,鈥 Thrash added. 鈥淚t shows them that with the right mindset and strategies, they too can build something great.鈥
One of the key takeaways from Connell鈥檚 talk was the importance of resilience and learning from failure. He shared how, in his first store in downtown Indianapolis, he 鈥漵tumbled along and made lots of mistakes鈥 but emphasized that every problem in business is solvable. Opening a second store in Broad Ripple, in turn, helped him figure out how to make things better at the downtown location, he shared.聽
聽鈥淲e鈥檝e always talked in terms of driving revenue, controlling expenses, and developing people,鈥 Connell explained. 鈥淚f the business isn鈥檛 successful, we look at what鈥檚 not working and fix it.鈥
Thrash echoed this sentiment, noting that one of the goals of the Entrepreneurship program is to decouple business failure from permanence.聽
鈥淚 ask founders to share their failures and how they overcame them,鈥 Thrash said. 鈥淩esilience is key to long-term success, and strategic problem-solving skills are critical. Business development is not a perfectly straight line鈥攊t鈥檚 a journey fraught with trials along the way.鈥
In addition to providing practical advice, Connell鈥檚 visit also offered students the opportunity to build their professional networks.聽
鈥淪tudents begin to build or add to their own network with individuals from their industry, potential mentors, future partners, or even employers,鈥 Thrash said. 鈥淭hese connections can be invaluable as they start their own entrepreneurial journeys.鈥
Connell鈥檚 story also highlighted the importance of taking calculated risks鈥攁 lesson that Thrash hopes students will take to heart.聽
鈥淔ounders are risk-takers typically and taking and not fearing 鈥榗alculated鈥 risks are behaviors we hope to teach,鈥 Thrash said. 鈥淕abe Connell is a great example of how risk can be your friend if you鈥檙e conscientious and surround yourself with the right resources.鈥
Connell鈥檚 engaging and candid discussion left a lasting impression on the students, all of whom are aspiring entrepreneurs themselves actively working on bringing their businesses to life. By sharing his experiences鈥攂oth the successes and the failures鈥擟onnell provided a roadmap for what it takes to build a successful business in today鈥檚 competitive landscape.
