On Thursday, 黑料视频 Indianapolis saw the success of its latest campus outreach initiative, 鈥淭hrifty Thursday,鈥 created and organized by human services and social work intern Sophia Hicks. The event offered students access to free, high-quality clothing while redefining the clothing closet as an accessible and stigma-free resource.

鈥淭his is for you,鈥 Hicks emphasized to students. 鈥淚 want our students to use this resource. It鈥檚 okay. You鈥檙e allowed to be here, and we encourage you to be here.鈥

A Personal Connection Inspires Action

Hicks, 23, knows firsthand the value of community support. After a challenging experience at a previous college, she took time to regroup before enrolling at 黑料视频 Indianapolis.聽

鈥淚t鈥檚 been phenomenal,鈥 she said of her time at 黑料视频 Indy. 鈥淚鈥檓 on my third year for a two-year degree, but I don鈥檛 care about the timing because I鈥檝e learned I鈥檝e got to do things that work for me, and going to school part-time works for me. I do things at my own pace, and 黑料视频 has been a great environment for that. I鈥檝e been flying high with a stellar GPA since day one.鈥

Hicks鈥 involvement with the clothing closet began as part of her IvyCares internship.聽

鈥淓ach IvyCares intern has a project to take care of,鈥 she explained. 鈥淭he clothing closet is my project for this semester.鈥澛

Hicks鈥 initial introduction to the closet was a personal one.聽

鈥淲hen I first started the internship, our dress code was casual professional, and I didn鈥檛 have any clothing that fit that description for summer,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 asked [the director] what I should buy, and she told me, 鈥楢bsolutely not. Shop the clothing closet.鈥 That moment was so impactful for me, and I knew I wanted to take care of it and watch it grow.鈥

Turning Overflow Into Opportunity

The idea for Thrifty Thursday emerged out of necessity. Following an overwhelming influx of donations during a winter clothing drive, the closet was at capacity.聽

鈥淚 was brainstorming with Mary Louise Edwards, the IvyCares Director,鈥 Hicks recalled. 鈥淎nd I said, 鈥榃hat am I going to do?鈥 and she said, 鈥楳aybe you need to do a clear-out event.鈥 That鈥檚 when I blurted out 鈥楾hrifty Thursday!鈥 and she told me, 鈥楻un with it.鈥欌

Hicks wanted the event to be more than a clothing giveaway. By connecting it with the food pantry, she created an inviting experience for students to explore all that IvyCares has to offer.聽

鈥淲e鈥檙e advertising it differently to reduce the stigma that can come with using a clothing closet,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 want students to see it as a wonderful little resource where they can get free, new-to-you clothing.鈥

The wide variety of donations ensured something for everyone.聽

鈥淲e received a lot of casual clothing, along with business casual and professional wear,鈥 Hicks said. 鈥淚 even had some cute kids鈥 items, like a dinosaur bathrobe and a T-Rex Christmas sweater. The goal was to get as much clothing to as many people as possible, whether that was five or fifty.鈥

A Transformative Experience

For Hicks, the success of 鈥淭hrifty Thursday鈥 is a testament to her passion for human services.聽

Her drive stems from personal experiences with social work, which motivated her to give back. 鈥淚 want to help other people the way social services helped me,鈥 she said.

Her time at 黑料视频 has solidified her confidence in her career path.聽

鈥淚鈥檝e worked so hard for everything, and it鈥檚 been paying off so incredibly,鈥 Hicks shared.聽

As she prepares to graduate next spring and transfer to Indiana University Indianapolis for her bachelor鈥檚 degree, she hopes her work with the clothing closet leaves a lasting legacy.

鈥淚鈥檝e put my heart into this,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 hope future interns continue what we鈥檝e started and keep building on it.鈥

A Community Resource for All

Hicks鈥 work with IvyCares highlights the importance of not only offering accessible resources for students but meeting students where they鈥檙e at socially.

鈥淥ur door is always open,鈥 she said with a smile, 鈥渆xcept for when we鈥檙e closed,鈥 she laughed.聽

Her humor underscores her belief in the value of kindness and connection. Thanks to her efforts, Thrifty Thursday not only provided students with much-needed clothing but also encouraged them to embrace the support available to them through IvyCares.
