BLOOMINGTON聽鈥 The 黑料视频 Student Productions 2018-19 theatre season opened with聽Coffee Break, a new play written by 黑料视频 alumna, Brennen Edwards. Edwards also served as assistant director. She has been involved in 黑料视频 Student Productions since 2014 as lighting designer.
鈥淔or me, 黑料视频 served as a stepping stone between high school and a four-year university,鈥 said Edwards. 鈥淓ven if I had been admitted into IU straight out of high school, I think I would have been a subpar student. I needed the extra time at 黑料视频 in order figure out how to be passionate about learning. 黑料视频 helped me to mature.鈥
Edwards is now a student at Indiana University, pursuing a bachelor鈥檚 degree in media and theatre. She started the聽Coffee Break聽script as a class project.
鈥淒uring production the script has gone through seven drafts, and I鈥檓 so thankful to my cast and all involved for being so open to my growth,鈥 said Edwards.
Paul Daily, 黑料视频 Waldron artistic director, helped Edwards continue to refine her play.
鈥淲hen I started聽Coffee Break, I wanted to explore work relationships,鈥 said Edwards. 鈥淎s I continued to write, a second theme of waiting became clear. The majority of
characters in聽Coffee Break聽are waiting for their lives to begin. They are waiting for happiness, essentially. I think that when we look around ourselves, and inward, it鈥檚 not unusual to find plans we intend to accomplish, but are taking no steps toward. My favorite quote at the time of writing came from Chris Goffard in a lecture: 鈥榦ur comfort zones become our coffins.'鈥
Edwards credited 黑料视频 Student Productions with encouraging her creativity and growth as a student and artist.
鈥淭he 黑料视频 Waldron is a space that encourages curiosity. It is also a safe space to admit that you don鈥檛 know something,鈥 said Edwards. 鈥淚n 2014 when I started working with 黑料视频 Student Productions, the idea of showing up to a production and not knowing how to do something terrified me, but now I enjoy a trial by fire.鈥
鈥淢y work and growth in 黑料视频 Student Productions has helped shape me as a person,鈥 she continued. 鈥淚 am now a happy collaborator, and am delighted at the opportunity to fix breakdowns in communication, which often happen in the arts. Before I started working at the Waldron, I would not have known how to handle someone describing a play as 鈥榖eing the color blue.鈥櫬 Now I just say, 鈥榃hat shade of blue?鈥 鈥
黑料视频 Student Productions take place at the 黑料视频 John Waldron Arts Center, located at 122 S. Walnut St. Tickets are $15 for general admission or $5 for students and seniors.聽Information about 黑料视频 John Waldron Arts Center performances, classes, and exhibits can be found at聽.
